Flesh — What It Means Biblically

Sometimes the struggle isn’t outside of us…
it’s within us.
The Bible calls this the “flesh.”
But what does that really mean?
📖 Scripture Focus
Galatians 5:16–17
“So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit…”
Romans 8:6
“The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.”
📖 What “Flesh” Means (Biblically)
The word “flesh” in Scripture can mean different things depending on the context:
→ The human body (neutral)
→ Human weakness (limited, temporary)
→ The sinful nature (life apart from God)
Most often in teaching, “flesh” refers to:
👉 living from self instead of the Spirit of God
It’s not just about actions…
it’s about the source.
📖 How It Shows Up in Real Life
The flesh can look like:
→ reacting instead of listening
→ striving instead of trusting
→ needing to be right
→ seeking control, validation, or comfort apart from God
→ giving in to emotions that lead away from truth
It doesn’t always feel wrong in the moment…
but it pulls us away from peace.
📖 The Contrast — Flesh vs Spirit
Scripture doesn’t just point out the problem…
it shows the way forward.
Galatians 5 continues to reveal:
→ The flesh produces conflict, pressure, and unrest
→ The Spirit produces love, peace, patience, and self-control
The difference is not just behavior—
👉 it’s who is leading.
📖 What God Does in Us
This is where your “Heart of Flesh” connects.
Ezekiel 36:26
“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you;
I will remove from you your heart of stone
and give you a heart of flesh.”
God doesn’t leave us stuck in the flesh.
He gives us:
→ a new heart
→ a new Spirit
→ a new way to live
Not by force…
but by transformation.
💛 Heart Connection
You may feel the tension inside—
wanting to do what’s right,
but feeling pulled another way.
That doesn’t mean you’re failing.
It means you’re becoming aware.
And awareness is where surrender begins.
You don’t overcome the flesh by fighting harder…
you overcome it by walking closer with Jesus.
Prayer
Lord,
Help me recognize what is coming from my flesh
and what is coming from Your Spirit.
Teach me to slow down,
to listen,
and to follow You instead of reacting on my own.
Thank You for giving me a new heart
and a new way to live.
Lead me into truth,
peace,
and self-control.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
