The Roots Beneath the OakIM
The strength we admire above the surface is often sustained by hidden roots that grew quietly through seasons nobody else could see.

I once heard it said that the root system beneath a tall oak tree often mirrors what you see above the ground.
And honestly, that stayed with me.
Because we admire the strength of the oak,
the height,
the reach,
the stability,
the endurance.
But we rarely think about what happened beneath the surface first.

The mighty oak began as a seed.

And we do not know the struggle that seed endured to break through the ground, establish roots, survive storms, push through resistance, and slowly become strong enough to sustain what would later stand tall above the earth.
And spiritually, people are often the same way.
We see strength later.
But we do not always see:
- the hidden prayers,
- the tears,
- the waiting,
- the sacrifice,
- the failures,
- the perseverance,
- or the quiet seasons where God was growing roots beneath the surface.

Strength That Was Built Slowly
What we often admire in others was usually built slowly over time.
Not instantly.
Not without resistance.
Not without pressure.
And not without seasons where nothing visible appeared to be happening at all.
But beneath the surface, roots were still growing.
Faith was still developing.
Character was still forming.
Understanding was still increasing.
And little by little, what was once fragile became strong enough to endure.
Sometimes we become discouraged because we compare our “seed season” to someone else’s “oak tree season.”
But God works differently than human timing.
Growth with God is often slower than we expect,
but deeper than we realize.
The life was already inside the seed.
And that reminds me so deeply of Christ.
The Bible says:
“In him was life; and the life was the light of men.”
— John 1:4
The Life Is in the Seed
We are talking about an oak tree and painting a picture of our spiritual new birth into becoming — being made into a new creature in Christ.
Many times we can look at a corn seed and see the same picture.
The life is already in the seed.
The entire corn plant is inside that one small seed:
the roots,
the stalk,
the leaves,
the tassel,
and every new ear of corn that will grow in due time.
It is all already there.
All we do is plant it, water it, tend to it, maybe pull a few weeds along the way —
and then we watch God do something miraculous.
The plant suddenly breaks through the soil.
And honestly, that reminds me so much of what happens when Christ is received into our spirit through faith.
Something new begins growing inside of us.
The Bible says:
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature…”— 2 Corinthians 5:17
Just like the oak tree grows slowly from the seed, spiritual growth also takes time.
We are still becoming.
Still growing.
Still learning.
Still being strengthened in Christ.
And then another thought came to me:
How many more seeds are produced from one single ear of corn?
That is such a beautiful picture of the ministry of Jesus.
Life producing life.
Faith producing faith.
The love of God continuing to spread from heart to heart.
To God be the glory.
The Bible says:
“The seed is the word of God.”— Luke 8:11
And John 1 begins teaching us something even deeper:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”— John 1:1
With God makes all the difference.
His Word brings life.
His truth brings light.
And His Church was always meant to grow.
Not merely buildings —
but people transformed through Jesus Christ.

And you, my friend, become part of that living Church when you place your hope, faith, and love in the Father God and the One He sent to save your soul.
And as we grow in Christ, we also begin producing good seed ourselves through love, truth, faith, encouragement, and obedience to God.
Glory hallelujah.
And thank You, Jesus.
And spiritual growth often begins invisibly long before visible strength appears.
Love in Christ,
Karen
