Pay Attention to the Roots
Sometimes what appears healthy on the surface is actually revealing a deeper need for care, protection, healing, nourishment, and spiritual attention beneath the roots.

Sometimes what appears at the roots is not simply new growth.
Sometimes it is a sign the tree is working hard to survive stress, protect itself, or redirect energy where care is needed most.
And sometimes our hearts do the same.
Not dead.
Not failing.
Just signaling that something beneath the surface needs attention.
“Keep thy heart with all diligence…”— Proverbs 4:23
The Roots Tell a Story
While checking on a young dogwood tree, I first noticed the leaves.
At first glance, the tree looked mostly healthy:
soft green leaves,
new growth,
flexible branches,
life still present.
But there were also small signs worth paying attention to:
slight drooping,
minor browning,
exposed roots,
and a small shoot rising near the base of the tree.
And the more I learned about dogwoods, the more I realized something important:
sometimes a tree can still appear alive and growing while quietly signaling stress underneath the surface.
That root shoot was not necessarily a sign of destruction.
In fact, it revealed that the root system was still alive and active.
But it also suggested:
stress,
exposed roots,
redirected energy,
survival response,
and the need for deeper care.
And honestly, people can do the same thing.
Not Every Survival Response Is True Healing
Sometimes when hearts feel exposed, overwhelmed, exhausted, unsupported, or spiritually dry, people begin producing survival responses.
Not because they are evil.
Not because they are hopeless.
But because something underneath needs care.
Sometimes stress produces:
striving,
overworking,
emotional reactions,
people pleasing,
unhealthy attachments,
fear,
control,
or constant activity.
And from the outside, it can even look productive for a while.
But God does not merely care about visible activity.
He cares about the roots.
Jesus continually teaches us to look deeper than appearances.
A healthy root system matters.
Root Protection Matters
One of the most important things a young dogwood needs is not punishment.
It needs:
cooler roots,
healthy soil,
moisture,
protection,
nourishment,
room to breathe,
and consistency.
The roots needed covering.
Not suffocating pressure —but protection.
Not a volcano of piled-up mulch crushing the trunk,
but a healthy ring of support around the roots.
And spiritually, that speaks so deeply to me.
Some people do not need harsher pressure.
They need truth.
Wisdom.
Rest.
Prayer.
Healthy boundaries.
Consistency in God’s Word.
And the safe covering of Christ while healing takes place beneath the surface.
God Often Works Beneath the Surface First
Sometimes God’s greatest work happens in hidden places long before visible strength appears.
Roots grow quietly.
Healing often happens quietly too.
And sometimes what first appears as weakness is actually an invitation from God to slow down and pay attention to what the soul needs most.
Not every visible symptom should simply be ignored.
And not every visible struggle means destruction either.
Sometimes discernment means slowing down long enough to ask:
“What are the roots trying to tell me?”
Keep Thy Heart With All Diligence
The Bible says:
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”— Proverbs 4:23
That Scripture feels very different when you realize how much life depends on healthy roots.
The condition of the heart eventually affects:
relationships,
decisions,
peace,
endurance,
discernment,
reactions,
and spiritual growth.
And maybe that is why Jesus continually invites us to abide in Him.
Because healthy fruit is sustained by healthy roots.
Sometimes the Issue Is Not Failure
Sometimes the issue is not failure.
Sometimes the roots simply need care.
And there is something deeply hopeful about that.
Because care means:
healing is still possible,
growth is still possible,
restoration is still possible,
and God is still working.
Even beneath the surface.
I hope this is a blessing to you.
Love in Christ,
Karen
