Remember the Ones Who Built the Road
A biblical reflection on gratitude, sacrifice, faithfulness, and the people God used to help prepare the road before us — all pointing ultimately to Jesus Christ, the Way.

Sometimes we travel roads so easily that we forget someone sacrificed to make them possible.
We do not see:
the blisters,
the exhaustion,
the long days in the heat,
the cold rain,
the missed meals,
the time away from family,
or the labor it took to build what we now move across so quickly.
And honestly, I began thinking about how much perspective changes when we remember the builder behind the road.
Gratitude changes how we travel.
Patience changes how we respond to others traveling beside us.
And honestly, sometimes the hardest part about roads is not simply traveling them —
it is learning how to keep walking after being hurt along the way.
Sometimes we notice the imperfections in what has been built.
And maybe that is because storms create potholes in roads too.
People get hurt.
Churches sometimes hurt people.
Neighbors hurt neighbors.
Families hurt families.
And sometimes people honestly do not yet know how to walk with Christ in truth, grace, wisdom, and love.
That is one reason we are here:
to come alongside one another,
encourage one another,
pray for one another,
and continue pointing each other back to Jesus.
Because focusing on Christ changes how we walk the road.
The Bible says:
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report… think on these things.”— Philippians 4:8
Thinking on Jesus,
thinking on truth,
thinking on what is good,
and remembering the love and mercy of God really does help steady the heart.
And honestly, Jesus continues teaching us the better road to take.
The Bible says:
“If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”— Romans 12:18
That means
:as far as it depends on me personally,
Jesus teaches me to choose the better road.
Not the bitter road.
Not revenge.
Not hatred.
Not returning evil for evil.
But continuing to walk in truth, wisdom, grace, forgiveness, and love.
Even when it is difficult.
Jesus said:
“Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;”— Matthew 5:44
That does not mean pretending hurt never happened.
But it does mean refusing to let bitterness become the road we walk on.
And honestly, without Jesus, that kind of love would be impossible.
But through Christ, God continues teaching us how to walk differently.
And spiritually, this reminded me deeply of Christ.
Jesus paid the ultimate sacrifice to make a way for us.
The Bible says:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life…”— John 14:6
And yet how often do we move through life forgetting the cost behind the road we now walk?
Unseen Sacrifice Still Matters
So much of what supports our lives was built through labor most people never stop to think about.
Roads.
Buildings.
Homes
Foundations.
Churches.
Families.
Communities.
And often the strongest things were built through sacrifice nobody fully saw at the time.
Sometimes we only notice the finished result while forgetting the endurance it required to get there.
And spiritually, many people are quietly carrying burdens, responsibilities, prayers, and acts of obedience that may never receive recognition from the world.
But God sees.
The Bible says:
“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.”— Galatians 6:9
Gratitude Changes the Journey
What if we slowed down enough to remember the people who helped make the road possible?
What if gratitude softened the frustration we sometimes feel toward others sharing the same road?
What if remembering sacrifice helped us walk with more patience, humility, mercy, and understanding?
And honestly, this speaks deeply to the Christian life.
Jesus said the way is narrow.
Not because God wants to make life impossible
—but because truth, love, faith, obedience, and surrender often require a different path than the world naturally chooses.
Still today, we are given another opportunity to walk that road with God.
One step at a time.
The Road Before Us
Somebody prayed before us.
Somebody endured before us.
Somebody stayed faithful before us.
Somebody kept believing God when nothing visible seemed to be changing.
And through Christ, their faithfulness helped make a way for someone else to keep walking forward.
And ultimately, Jesus made the greatest sacrifice of all so we could have life through Him.

And sometimes we forget something even deeper.
Before we ever knew His name…
Jesus already had us on His heart.
The Bible says:
“Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;”— John 17:20
Long before we understood the road ahead, Jesus was already praying for those who would one day believe through the testimony, faithfulness, prayers, and obedience of others.
That changes how we see people.
That changes how we see prayer.
And honestly…
that changes how we see the road itself.
Somebody endured.
Somebody stayed faithful.
Somebody kept praying.
Somebody kept believing God when nothing visible seemed to be changing.
And through Christ, their faithfulness helped make a way for someone else to keep walking forward.
To God be the glory.
Because ultimately every good road leads us back to Jesus
—the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
“I am the way, the truth, and the life…”— John 14:6
But there is something even deeper to remember.
The Bible says:
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”— John 15:13
That kind of love changes everything.
And maybe the more we remember the sacrifice behind the road, the more grateful we become simply to keep walking it with God.
With love in Christ,
Karen
