Jesus Is the Gate — Why Don’t You Just Use It?

John 10:9 (NLT)
“Yes, I am the gate. Those who come in through me will be saved. They will come and go freely and will find good pastures.”
Before We Begin
There is a difference between believing in Jesus…
and walking with Him.
This is a simple question—but it searches the heart:
Why don’t we just use the gate?
The Gate Is Jesus
Jesus is not just a teacher.
He is not just someone we admire or talk about.
He is the way.
“I am the way, the truth, and the life:
no man cometh unto the Father, but by Me.”
— John 14:6
Jesus is the gate God provided for us to enter into life.
Not a suggestion.
Not one of many options.
He is the way in.
👉 “It was not to condemn me, but to change me.”
Belief Is Not the Same as Obedience
Jesus is not asking for perfect behavior.
He is asking for a surrendered heart.
We can believe in Jesus… and still not do what He says.
In the same way, we can believe a stop sign is real,
know what it means…
and still not fully obey it.
A roll stop.
An almost stop.
Nothing’s coming—so I don’t stop.
I’m in a hurry—so I won’t stop.
Assuming no one is watching
—so I don’t stop.
But belief without obedience
does not change the outcome.
Did we obey what we believed?
And if not…
did we really believe?
What happens when we exalt ourselves above
who we say God is?
Are we trusting in God—
or taking matters into our own hands?
Who are we really respecting?
Who are we really serving?
These are hard questions.
But are we obeying…
or just pretending to obey?
If I don’t buckle my seatbelt
because I can see where I’m going…
And I hold it across me
only when I think someone might see…
Am I obeying the law?
—or just pretending to obey it?
And what about relationships?
If someone breaks your boundaries…
and then pretends it didn’t happen…
How does that make you feel?
Did they honor you?
Or did they ignore the truth?
The Bible tells us the human heart has a condition.
It is deceptive…
and desperately wicked.
But Jesus came to heal that condition.
He didn’t come just to be believed in—
He came to make us new.
“And I will give you a new heart…”
— Ezekiel 36:26
A born-again heart is different.
It doesn’t pretend.
It responds.
Belief without obedience misses the mark of the relationship
and shifts who is Lord over your life.
It really is important to let John 3:17 melt into your heart.
This is for every heart to receive.
“For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world;
but that the world through him might be saved.”
— John 3:17
Jesus is not asking for perfect behavior.
He is asking for a surrendered heart.
It Was Not to Condemn—But to Change
These questions are not meant to condemn.
They are meant to reveal.
“For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world;
but that the world through him might be saved.”
— John 3:17
Jesus does not expose our hearts to shame us.
He reveals what is true—
so He can heal what is broken.
Conviction is not rejection.
It is an invitation.
An invitation to step out of what is false…
and into what is real.
He does not point out sin and leave us there.
He calls us out of it—
into life.
It was not to condemn me…
It was to change me.
Walking With Him
Following Jesus is not only believing in Him—
it is walking with Him.
It is time with Him.
Listening to Him.
Fellowship with Him.
This relationship goes beyond what we can do in our own strength.
It is supernatural—
a life lived in obedience,
guided by His voice,
and shaped by His presence.

— You, Me, and the Difference Christ Makes Teaching the Freedoms in Christ
The Narrow Gate
Scripture calls us beyond belief alone.
“Shall we not much rather be in subjection
unto the Father of spirits, and live?”
— Hebrews 12:9
“Follow peace with all men, and holiness,
without which no man shall see the Lord.”
— Hebrews 12:14
Jesus is the gate.
Jesus makes us holy.
But we must choose to go through Him—
not just admire Him, believe in Him, or speak about Him.
And Jesus shows us what this life looks like:
“Love your enemies,
bless them that curse you,
do good to them that hate you,
and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.”
— Matthew 5:44
This is the way of Christ.
This is the narrow gate.
To Know and Believe His Love
God is love.
And to walk through the gate is to enter into that love.
“And we have known and believed
the love that God hath to us.”
— 1 John 4:16
This is more than believing about Him.
This is coming to know Him.
To trust Him.
To live in Him.
Reflection
Belief acknowledges Jesus.
Obedience follows Him.
It is one thing to stand at the gate and see it.
It is another thing to walk through it.
Invitation
If something in your heart is stirring…
don’t ignore it.
You don’t have to have everything figured out.
You can begin right now.
Not by striving—
but by surrendering.
If you’ve been standing at the gate…
Enter.
