The Fear of the Lord — What Does It Mean?

The Fear of the Lord —
What Does It Mean?
Proverbs 9:10
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom:
and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.”
Many people hear the phrase “fear of the Lord” and immediately think it means terror, panic, punishment, or being afraid that God wants to harm them.
But the fear of the Lord is very different from the fear of man.
The fear of man traps us.
The fear of the Lord frees us into wisdom, surrender, discernment, humility, and life.
Biblical fear of the Lord means reverence.
It means recognizing who God truly is:
Holy.
Righteous.
All-knowing.
Faithful.
Powerful.
Merciful.
True.
The fear of the Lord is the understanding that God alone is worthy to lead our lives.
It is not the fear of a cruel master.
It is the reverence of a loving Father whose wisdom is greater than our own understanding.
When we fear man more than God,
we begin living trapped by:
people-pleasing,
emotional pressure,
insecurity,
dependence on approval,
fear of rejection,
fear of loss,
fear of conflict,
or fear that we have no other choice.
But when we learn to trust God above people, something changes in our hearts.
Discernment becomes clearer.
Peace grows.
Wisdom grows.
Faith grows.
The fear of the Lord teaches us to walk carefully, humbly, prayerfully, and obediently before God.
Not because we are trying to earn His love.
But because we recognize His love is true.
Reverence changes the way we live.
It changes:
how we speak,
how we treat people,
how we make decisions,
how we handle pressure,
how we walk through fear,
and how we trust God when life feels uncertain.
The fear of the Lord does not pull us away from God.
It draws us closer to Him.
It teaches us that God is not merely someone we call on in emergencies.
He is the source of life itself.
And when we begin to understand who He truly is, obedience stops feeling like control and starts becoming trust.
Sometimes the greatest evidence that the fear of the Lord is growing in us is not loudness, performance, or outward appearance.
Sometimes it is simply this:
Learning to trust God enough to obey Him in peace.
