What Is Hidden Beneath the Surface?

Video 3 — We Need to Live Deeper Lives
The Covered Stream — Living Water Beneath the Surface

A young man stands beside the massive roots of a large oak tree on a mountain side where a hidden stream of clear water flows from beneath the roots and over solid rock, illustrating spiritual healing and the living water of Christ beneath the surface.
Beneath this great oak tree was a hidden mountain stream covered by old leaves, mud, roots, and debris. As my son carefully uncovered the surface, we discovered pure mountain water flowing from beneath the root of this large oak tree and onto a solid rock — a beautiful reminder that Christ is our Rock. At first the water became muddied as the old dead debris was stirred up and carried away, but as the stream continued to flow, the water became clear again. This became such a powerful picture of the work of the Holy Spirit within the soul — uncovering hidden places buried beneath grief, fear, pain, distractions, and survival living so the living water underneath could flow freely again.

In this teaching and personal testimony, Karen shares the story of discovering a hidden mountain stream buried beneath layers of leaves, mud, roots, and debris — and how God used that moment to reveal a deeper spiritual picture about the soul, healing, grief, surrender, and transformation through Jesus Christ.

What first appeared to be only mud, leaves, and brokenness was actually hiding living water flowing beneath the surface the entire time.

The hidden mountain stream began beneath the roots of this great oak tree. At first all we could see was the covering above it, but underneath the surface the water was already flowing. What made this moment so powerful is that we had no idea the stream was even there until the leaves, mud, roots, and debris began to be uncovered. It became such a beautiful picture of how God already knows what He has placed within us — life, healing, purpose, and living water flowing beneath the surface — just waiting to be uncovered. Just as this hidden stream needed Daniel’s work to remove the covering, we also need the work of the Holy Spirit through faith in Jesus Christ, uncovering the hidden places of the soul so the living water of God can begin to flow clearly again.

This testimony-centered teaching explores:

• uncovering hidden healing

• grief and soul transformation

• living water beneath the surface

• emotional exhaustion and surrender

• temporary comfort vs true transformation

• healing through Christ from the inside out

• spiritually minded living

• deeper life in God

The Prayer on the Mountain Road

Not long after losing her husband, Karen and her son traveled unexpectedly into the mountains of West Virginia during a cold, rainy season.

The grief was still very raw.

The exhaustion,

the emotional survival mode,

and the pain of learning to live without someone deeply loved

was still very present.

As they drove toward the mountain in miserable weather without proper clothing or preparation,

Karen quietly prayed:

“Lord, stop the rain… but do it in a way he knows it’s from You.”

Then she prayed one more prayer:

“Lord, show him something he’s never seen before…

and keep my mouth shut.”

By the time they arrived, the rain had stopped.

The sky was blue.

The entire trail was dry.

Hidden mountain stream partially covered by dead leaves, moss, and forest debris beneath a wooded hillside before the water was fully uncovered.
At first, we had no idea a living mountain stream was flowing beneath the surface. But my son could hear the pool of water and ran to the top to see. Hidden under leaves, silt, and debris, the water remained unseen until the covering began to be removed. This became a powerful picture of the soul and the hidden work of God. Sometimes what God has already placed within us through Christ is buried beneath grief, fear, pain, distraction, or emotional exhaustion — yet the living water is still there. Just as my son carefully uncovered the stream, we too need the work of the Holy Spirit to help reveal what God already knows is flowing inside of us through believing in Jesus Christ.

Discovering the Hidden Stream

As they walked back down the mountain road, Karen’s son suddenly ran up the steep hillside after hearing the sound of water beneath the ground.

At first, nothing could be seen.

Only leaves,

roots,

mud,

and debris covered the area.

But underneath the surface, a hidden stream was still flowing.

For nearly two hours, he carefully uncovered the stream little by little with a stick.

As the leaves and mud were removed, the water initially became muddy and cloudy.

But eventually, beautiful clear mountain water began flowing openly again.

After the dead leaves, mud, and debris were removed, the hidden mountain stream began to flow clearly beneath the great oak tree. What first appeared buried and unseen became a powerful picture of the work of the Holy Spirit within the soul. As the water cleared, joy emerged — reminding us that God is able to uncover what He already placed deep within us through Jesus Christ.

A Picture of the Soul

What God began revealing through that hidden stream was this:

The soul can become covered over in the same way.

Grief,

fear,

pain,

striving,

approval seeking,

emotional exhaustion,

survival mode,

and wounds from life

can slowly build layers over the deeper life God placed within us.

But underneath the surface, the living water of Christ is still flowing.

The stream was never gone.

It was only covered.

A young man kneels beside the roots of a large oak tree uncovering a hidden mountain stream flowing over solid rock beneath the surface, symbolizing Christ as the foundation and source of living water.
As the hidden stream was uncovered beneath the roots of this great oak tree, we discovered the water was flowing across a solid rock beneath the surface. This became such a powerful picture of Christ as our foundation — the Rock that remains steady beneath the hidden places of the soul. Even when life becomes covered by grief, fear, pain, distractions, or survival living, God is still working underneath the surface, uncovering what He already knows is there through the work of the Holy Spirit.

Temporary Comfort vs Transformation

One of the strongest lessons in this teaching is the difference between temporary comfort and true transformation.

Many times we seek temporary relief:

• validation from people,

• emotional reassurance,

• distractions,

• approval,

• performance,

• or unstable emotional sources.

But those things never fully satisfy the soul.

God desires something deeper.

He does not merely comfort us temporarily.

He transforms us from the inside out.

As the dead leaves, mud, and debris were removed from the hidden mountain stream, the water first became cloudy and stirred up before it began to run clear again. This became a powerful picture of the healing work of God within the soul. Sometimes when the Holy Spirit begins uncovering what has been buried beneath grief, fear, pain, or emotional exhaustion, life may temporarily feel muddier before clarity comes. But underneath the surface, the living water was still flowing the entire time.

The Water Became Muddy

As the stream was uncovered, the water initially became dirtier.

The mud had to be stirred up before the water could become clear.

Karen explains how healing often works the same way.

Sometimes life can temporarily feel messier during healing because buried pain, fears, wounds, unhealthy patterns, and emotional struggles are being uncovered.

But the muddy season is not failure.

It is part of the cleanup process.

Eventually, the water clears.

Living Water Beneath the Surface

Psalm 46:4 says:

“There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of God.”

God began showing Karen that the river represents:

• the life of God,

• the Spirit of God,

• the presence of God,

• and the living water of Christ flowing within us.

Jesus is not only trying to improve behavior.

He is uncovering a deeper life within the soul.

A life rooted in:

• peace,

• surrender,

• healing,

• love,

• and truth.

Learning to Go Vertical

One of the recurring themes throughout this series is the difference between horizontal living and vertical living.

Horizontal living seeks healing through unstable sources:

• approval,

• validation,

• temporary fixes,

• emotional dependency,

• or worldly comfort.

Vertical living turns toward God.

Karen shares how God slowly taught her to stop seeking healing only horizontally and begin discovering the deeper healing found through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

You Are Not Stuck

One of the strongest encouragements throughout this teaching is this:

You are not stuck.

You are still growing.

Even when life feels muddy,

confusing,

or emotionally overwhelming,

God is still working beneath the surface.

The stream is still there.

The living water is still flowing.

And Jesus knows how to uncover it.

The Soul Can Be Renewed

Romans 8:6 says:

“To be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.”

Transformation is not pretending pain does not exist.

Transformation is allowing Jesus to:

• renew the mind,

• heal the soul,

• uncover buried wounds,

• restore peace,

• and slowly teach us how to live again.

After the dead leaves, mud, and debris were removed, the hidden mountain stream could finally be seen flowing from beneath the great oak tree down toward the pool below. What was once buried beneath the surface became visible through uncovering. This became a powerful picture of how God often works deeply within the soul before we can clearly see what He is doing. Just as the stream needed uncovering, we also need the work of the Holy Spirit through believing in Jesus Christ and through going deeper than surface-level understanding in the Word of God.

A Final Encouragement

Maybe your soul feels covered over right now.

Covered by:

• grief,

• fear,

• loneliness,

• confusion,

• emotional exhaustion,

• pain,

• or survival mode.

But underneath all the layers, the living water is still there.

Jesus knows how to uncover it.

Healing may temporarily feel muddy before it becomes clear.

But God truly does heal from the inside out.

And little by little, He can transform the soul through His presence, His truth, and His living water flowing beneath the surface.

Revelation 22:1–2 — “And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb.” After uncovering the hidden mountain stream flowing beneath the great oak tree, this Scripture became a powerful reminder that God’s living water brings healing, life, restoration, and fruitfulness through Jesus Christ. Just as the hidden stream was already flowing beneath the surface before it could be clearly seen, God is often working deeply within the soul before His healing and transformation become visible.

Jesus said if we seek, we shall find. Just as the hidden stream was already flowing beneath the surface before it was uncovered, God is often working deeply within the soul before His healing and transformation become visible through believing in Jesus Christ and going deeper in the Word of God.
