Learning to Trust God—One Decision at a Time

Our view may change. God remains the same. — Hebrews 13:8

Come sit with me awhile.

Years ago, the Lord got my attention with this Scripture when I was facing a decision about what to do:

“Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.”

—Proverbs 16:3 KJV

And then there was another decision. And another. Big things and little things—almost every day brings something we can learn to trust God with.

Yesterday morning, I was working on house plans, and I wrote this Scripture right around the drawing. As I compared different Bible versions, I began paying closer attention to the words.

Commit. Trust. Works. Actions. Activities. Thoughts. Plans.

The Amplified Classic wording especially caught my attention—trusting my work wholly to Him and my thoughts becoming agreeable to His will.

That became part of my prayer. Lord, I am bringing this before You. Help me think according to Your will. I want to be willing to listen and let You direct me.

Toward the end of my study, I heard a prayer and wrote it down. These words connected with what I was learning:

“I surrender every thought, plan, and desire into Your hands.”

“Order my steps, align my decisions with Your will.”

There is something so reassuring about actually putting this Scripture into practice. We can bring what concerns us to God and relax in trusting Him. We can keep doing the work before us without having to figure out every answer ourselves.

There is a calm and a peace in learning to trust God and depend on Him.

As the day unfolded, I found myself counting my blessings, one by one. What a wonderful day it was.

Then, looking at these photographs from different angles, another thought caught my attention. Each picture drew my eyes to something different—the clouds, the trees, the brilliant light shining on the water.

And I thought about how we each come to know God through different circumstances.

Our view may change. God remains the same.

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”

—Hebrews 13:8 KJV

Someone may be learning to trust Him through uncertainty. Someone else may be thanking Him for an answered prayer. Another may be discovering His comfort in a difficult season.

Isn’t God good? He knows what every one of us is going through. He can comfort one, strengthen another, and guide someone else—all at the same time. His care for one person does not leave another forgotten.

I think that is such a beautiful reason to come together and share. Someone else may have noticed something about His goodness that I have overlooked. As we listen, share, and let His Word guide our understanding, we can help one another know Him more clearly.

What a blessing that God has given us one another to share in His goodness.

Perhaps you have a decision before you today, big or small. Bring it to Him. Let Him shape your thinking as you entrust your work to His care. You can trust Him even while you are still learning what to do.

The God we trust beneath the clouds is the same God we thank in the morning light.

Father, thank You for caring for each of us so personally. We surrender our thoughts, plans, and desires into Your hands. Align our decisions with Your will. Teach us to trust You and rest in Your care. Help us notice Your blessings and encourage one another by sharing Your goodness. In Jesus’ name, amen.

And this brings me to something I’m studying next: What does the armor of God have to do with our everyday relationship with Him?

As we learn to trust God with our thoughts, decisions, and daily lives, how do we also learn to stand in His strength?

Come join me in the next Bible study as we open Ephesians 6 together. Christ is the Teacher; I am a fellow learner.
